Starring acting notables Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Kathy Baker, Sissy Spacek, Robin Wright Penn, Ian McShane and Aidan Quinn to name a few, this film directed by Rodrigo Garcia is a gem, which superbly blends cinema, short stories and great theatre.  Captives of the very relationships that define and sustain them, nine women resiliently meet the travails and disappointments of life.

Holly Hunter

Each of the nine vignettes depicts a different character at an emotional crossroads and has excellent and memorable performances by the entire cast. July 26, The Constant Gardener, 7:00pm,  Fernando Meirelles  Germany 2005  (R)  2hr.9min. This finely directed political thriller, based on a novel by John Le Carre, stars Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz as a social activist who accompanies her British diplomat husband, actor Ralph Fiennes, on assignment to Kenya.  After she is found murdered, he must investigate her death, their relationship, his own heart and the far-reaching conspiracy she had been unraveling. This hauntingly poetic film looks at the horror of a world that is willing to cast a blind eye at the problems created by big business and corrupt governments in their cold-blooded pursuit of money and power.

The film which received extraordinary reviews is chillingly authentic as it re-creates the last days of Scholl's life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest, to interrogation, trial and sentence. August 16, Cache ("Hidden"), 7pm Michael Haneke, France 200 (R), 1hr.57min.
