JAZZ EVENTS: EDITOR'S PICK

MONTREAL JAZZ  FEST &  MMMIS - Musical Instrument Show

Each summer the heart of Montréal is transformed into a giant musical extravaganza during the Montréal International Jazz Festival, the "massive indoor-outdoor festival with a refreshingly broad definition of jazz" (Entertainment Weekly). It is "Montréal's answer to Mardi Gras and the highlight of the summer." (Clifford Krauss, New York Times). And JazzTimes magazine says: "No doubt about it, Montreal has the best jazz festival of them all." This year the Festival celebrates its 27th Anniversary with an 11-day extravaganza, from June 29th - July 9th. From its humble beginnings in 1980, when 12,000 people came to hear Ray Charles, Vic Vogel, Chick Corea and Gary Burton, the Festival has become "the event that dwarfs them all" (Travel & Leisure), and is widely regarded as "the biggest and best jazz festival on the planet." (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune). The Festival's incredible breadth of programming - jazz, blues, Latin-jazz, Brazilian, Cuban, African, reggae, electronica and more - now attracts nearly 2 million festivalgoers from all over the world. 2,500 artists from 20 countries participate in more than 500 concerts, 350 of them free on 10 outdoor stages. This year's confirmed performers (tickets on sale now) include: B.B. King, Patricia Barber, John Zorn's Masada, John Pizzarelli and Bonnie Raitt. Many, many more will be announced in the coming months, and a full ticketed-event schedule will be available by early May. I have more names that I can release to magazines if you need them. An important  addition to the Jazz Festival is the Montréal Musician and Musical Instrument Show , July 6 - 9 (MMMIS) www.mmmis.ca, which had a successful debut last year. This wonderful, free-to-the-public event allows music fans to visit over 70 exhibitors, and interact with musicians and musical instrument manufacturers. It is a perfect excursion for musicians and novice music fans alike. Second Edition of the MMMIS, July 6th to 9th: Come see and play instruments by the finest luthiers and instrument makers in the world! The Montreal Musician and Musical Instrument Show (MMMIS) is pleased to announce its second year at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, presented in collaboration with General Motors Canada. The event will take place from July 6th to 9th in the Grande-Place in complexe Desjardins, Place des Arts and on the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal's exterior site. It's a great opportunity to try the products of the world's finest luthiers and other manufacturers of musical instruments. From its inception, the primary mission of the MMMIS has been to promote music-making within the general public.

And last year's first edition proved a huge success: no fewer than 90,000 visitors stopped by during the four-day event. Forty exhibitors set up shop and enthusiasm-especially among industry professionals-was boundless. Viewed from the upper galleries of the complexe Desjardins, the exhibiting area below seemed like a giant electro-acoustic laboratory. Anyone and everyone who attended was heartily welcomed. 52% of visitors described themselves as amateur musicians. 18% described themselves as professionals. And a remarkable 70% described their visit as giving them the urge to get more into music-making. It's easy to see why: the MMMIS addressed a real need. The exhibitors' many on-site activities, workshops given by top musicians and appearances by artists such as John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Jim Marshall and Oliver Jones clearly underscored a common desire for interaction among musicians, whatever their levels of skill.  A novelty: the Place des Luthiers.  Installed in the main hall at Place des Arts, the foyer of the Théâtre Jean-Duceppe and in the Cinquième Salle (also in Place des Arts), over 60 guitar-makers and other instrument manufacturers from five countries will be present, many known throughout the world. Throughout the lower level of the complexe Desjardins, the second edition of the MMMIS will feature over fifty kiosks, all hosted by brand name instrument makers. The workshops will this year be presented in the Studio-Théâtre of Place des Arts, as well as in the Salon Jeanne-Mance of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Rencontre series, featuring internationally renowned artists will take place in the Théâtre Jean-Duceppe. The MMMIS will also be visible on the exterior site of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, offering activities to the public at large.  The MMMIS has this year created the Blues Camp, which will be offered free of charge to 50 teenagers aged 13 to 17. Throughout 7 days, young people will have the opportunity to deepen their musical understanding. The experience will culminate with a live show on an exterior stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Among the biggest brand names and celebrities on hand will be: Apple Canada, Archambault, Art & Lutherie, Beyerdynamic, Bosendorfer, D'Addario, Digitech, Evolution Drums, Guitares Demers, Hagstrom, Ibanez, J. Michael, Korg, La Boutique du Musicien, Guitares Godin, Les guitares La Patrie, Les guitares Norman, Seagull guitars, Simon & Patrick guitars, Steve's Music Store, Marshall, Morley, Orange, Pearl, Pianos Prestige, Productions Kila, Roland Canada, Rotosound, Sennheiser , Solotech location, Steinway & Sons, Studio Jam Avenue, Tama, Warwick and XXL Guitars.
