Gina was born on June 10, 1962 at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California....the youngest of 5 children. She was three weeks early...and says that is why she is so impatient today! Her ethnic background is French, Russian, and Dutch, and says "I could be the Meryl Streep of the Mediterranean world!" She was a Valley girl, and a surfer chick! She grew up in Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley. Trying to shake that image, she moved to New York and studied at New York University, and got a degree of Bachelour of Arts.
She has studied with such prestigious teachers as Sandra Seacat, Harold Guskin, David Memet and at Circle in the Square. Her theatre credits include Camille, John Robin Baitz's The Substance of Fire, and William Mastrosimone's Nanawatai. She is a founding member of the New York based theatre group Naked Angels. Her big screen debut was in Pretty in Pink in 1986, and soon had roles in Red Heat (1988), Cocktail (1988), Out for Justice (1991), and Sinatra (1992)which she won rave reviews for the portrayal of Nancy Sinatra. Some of her most recent roles were in The Player (1992), Showgirls (1995), Bound (1996), Touch (1997), Face/Off (1997), This World, then the Fireworks (1997), Lies and Whispers/Prague Duet (1998), Palmetto (1998), One Tough Cop (1998), Lulu on the Bridge (1999), and the TV movie Legalese (1998). Gina, the woman: What does sahe like and who is she according to Mike "Bonkers": Gina Gershon is actually related to the real life Barbie, Ken and Stacey dolls! Ken Handler's wife, Suzie, is a cousin of Gina's mom. So Gina and the Stacey doll are second cousins. Barbie I guess would some sort of second aunt in law. Beauty, I guess, is in the lineage." She starred in a music video by the cars called "Hello Again." She says she had "hello" written across her tongue. When she was a little girl, she almost drowned looking for starfish on the beach. She got busted coming back from Cuba trying to smuggle cigars back to the U.S. She loves champagne. When Bound started filming, Gina went to Jen Tilly's trailer, and offered her tequila and chocolates. A girl fell from the balcony in San Francisco trying to get to Gina at the San Francisco Gay & Lesbian film festival. She says from that point she realised what it must have been like to be a Beatle. Her boxing partner preparing for Bound was Bob Dylan. She was invited to play on stage with him, but couldn't go because she was filming Bound. During a recent interview with Conan O'Brian, she wiped spit on him. That's our girl. :-) Gina likes to sleep in the nude, with lots of pillows. She doesn't trust anyone who doesn't like to eat. Favorite food: sesame seed bagel with cream cheese, onion, tomato and Nova Scotia Lox. She would like to have drag queens dress up and play one of her roles, right down to the color of lipstick. Still gets butterflies at curtain call. She smokes cigars. Got into trouble in High School, and had the choice of either all girls' school, or Beverly Hills. She choose Beverly Hills!
